Hennessy is the largest and one of the most historically significant Cognac houses in the world, founded in 1765 in the town of Cognac, France. Cognac is a protected designation: it is a brandy that must be twice distilled in copper pot stills and aged in French oak, produced only within the legally defined Cognac region of western France. Hennessy's prestige expressions, such as Paradis and X.O, are blends drawn from extensive reserves of aged eaux-de-vie.
The X.O (Extra Old) designation was, in fact, created by Hennessy in 1870 and has since become an official Cognac age category. X.O blends contain eaux-de-vie aged for a minimum of ten years, though in practice the components are often considerably older. Paradis sits above X.O in the range, drawing on rare reserves from the house's oldest cellars for a softer, more layered profile.
Magnum (150cl) and larger formats are particularly sought after by collectors, as fewer are produced and they present strikingly on a back bar or in a private collection. What is the difference between X.O and Paradis?
X.O is a blend of eaux-de-vie aged a minimum of ten years. Paradis is a higher-tier blend using older, rarer reserves for greater complexity and a smoother finish.
